Modular Unpatched: An Introduction to Modular Synthesis with VCV Rack 2

Künstler*in(nen)
Sonia Killmann

In the framework of Multiplica Lab (22 & 23.02.2025)

VENUE: Casino Display, 1, rue de la Loge, L-1945 Luxembourg

In this workshop participants will learn the basic concepts of modular synthesis taught via the free programme VCV Rack. VCV Rack is a digital software that will allow us to explore basic concepts behind modules, wave forms and creative patching techniques. We will also learn how to save and record patches, so that the participants may take their patches home and use them for their own creative purposes. No prior knowledge with modular synthesizers, VCV Rack 2 or electronic music is required. The participants will also be provided with iPads containing VCV Rack 2, though it is advisable to bring your own laptop if you would like to take your patch home with you after. During the workshop there will also be an opportunity to play with physical hardware, in order to gain hands-on experience. Headphones are also required for this workshop.

VCV Rack 2 Free - To download (if own laptop is used)

Sonia Killmann is a saxophone player, electronic musician, and audiovisual artist whose practice is deeply rooted in interdisciplinary work and collaborative processes. Her recent work explores the relationship between sound and environment, drawing inspiration from Pauline Oliveros' concepts of collective listening and sonic meditation. Since early 2024 Sonia has been working a lot with modular synthesizers and has researched the conjunction of modular synthesis with acoustic instruments at the Electronic Music Studios (EMS) in Stockholm in March 2024. As a Cryptic Artist, Sonia creates immersive experiences as an electronic and multimedia composer.
