Artist(s)
Sam Erpelding

VENUE: Luxembourg Learning Centre at the University of Luxembourg, Belval Campus

This sound installation by Luxembourgish sound engineer and sound artist Sam Erpelding developed out three residencies  at Casino Display, the University of Luxembourg and the C-Lab Taiwan Sound Lab in Taipei. His research is based on his doctoral thesis in the field of ecoacoustics and computer music. It explores the sonic health of protected ecosystems in Austria and Taiwan. During his artist residency in Luxembourg, the sound artist exhibited a series of immersive sonic artworks based on his research conducted in the Donau-Auen and Kalkalpen National Parks in Austria. These works were collectively titled [to the dead poplar // to the old beech tree].

In the residency in Taipei, he developed a new electroacoustic composition, [Whisperings of uncle butterfly and unheard spells of biãn fú], which was based on his field-trips in the Yangmingshan National Park, the Yuantan Natural Eco-Park in Alishan, and Shuangxi Tropical Arboretum, near Kaohsiung. These field-trips and artworks were conducted in partnership with the Bat Conservation Society of Taipei, Academia Sinica Taiwan, and the National Taiwan University of Arts.
