Sound workshop in the framework of the exhibition Black Air

16+

Transmission Ecology refers to the dynamic and shifting relationship between energy, people, and devices. The workshop will address the artistic possibilities of radio transmission and reception, exploring different means of engaging with the radio frequency spectrum that surrounds us. The workshop will explore the material aspects of the electro-magnetic spectrum and the use of transmission technologies as an artistic medium in sound design for dance, theater, sculpture, art installations, sound works, and radio broadcasts.

Participants will create a temporary and ephemeral radio station that broadcasts to the surrounding community and beyond. It is recommended to bring radio receivers, emitters, two-way radios, telephones, mobile phones: things capable of transmitting a signal. Together, we will make these devices speak to each other.

Jeff Kolar is a composer, sound artist, and founder of Radius, an experimental radio broadcast platform established in 2010. His work has been exhibited internationally at the Smithsonian Museum, Museum of Arts and Design, CTM Festival for Adventurous Music, Radio Revolten Radio Art Festival, and reviewed in The New York Times, The Wire Magazine, Red Bull Music Academy, and more.
