Vann Goes

Artist(s)
Brent Birnbaum

performance in the streets of Luxembourg-City in the framework of the exhibition Paintings for Sculptors by Brent Birnbaum at Galerie PJ, Metz

with the participation of students from the Université de Lorraine - Department of Visual Arts

It all began a few years ago, when the American artist Brent Birnbaum (his installation Ride (W/) The Wind was presented in the "Aquarium" of Casino Luxembourg in 2013) started to steal/collect the keys to the cloakrooms of the museums he visited, including that of Casino Luxembourg. In order to symbolically return what has been stolen, Birnbaum thought of a performance in the form of a treasure hunt. His "Vann Goes" sculptures, small totems made with the help of students from the Université de Lorraine, were hidden in the city. It is up to the public to go and find them, in the hope of appropriating an original work.

The treasure hunt will take place next Sunday morning near the Casino. The sculptures in question will bear the following message: "Vous venez de trouver une sculpture ‘Vann Goes’ de l’artiste américain Brent Birnbaum. Elle est à vous!" (You have just found a sculpture 'Vann Goes' by the American artist Brent Birnbaum. It's yours).

Then go to Casino Luxembourg to collect your certificate of authenticity.

BRENT BIRNBAUM

Brent Birnbaum's work begins by exploring the world in search of found objects that have not been used in an artistic context and that contain the potential to be manipulated into something new and powerful. He strives to surprise and captivate the viewer by expanding the dialogue about contemporary art. The familiarity of his materials makes his works accessible to a wide audience, as does the humour they contain. Birnbaum embarks on projects that challenge him mentally and physically by collecting a difficult quantity or an absurd material. Inspired by both art history and ready-made materials, he is on a quest to find and create the invisible angles of life.
