Wannes Goetschalckx – Toothpick

Wannes Goetschalckx, Toothpick, 2012
Artist residencies

The starting point for Wannes Goetschalckx’s project was a huge poplar tree in the “Aquarium” of Casino Luxembourg, which he had to carve into a toothpick with his own hands. Since the start of his artist residency in September 2011, he has been working on this titanic task. Wannes Goetschalckx literally took on the tree, cutting it by hand, layer by layer, without using industrial tools. This creative act, in terms of both physical energy and time investment, underlines the reverence of the artist, the human being, towards the majestic force of nature. The publication, accompanied by a “Making of” DVD, traces the artist's approach step by step.
