Max Kreis: End of In-University Residency Symposium

In collaboration with the University of Luxembourg

VENUE: Casino Display, 1, rue de la Loge, L-1945 Luxembourg

In September 2024, Max Kreis inaugurated the first residency collaboration between Casino Display and the University of Luxembourg. During his residency, he has been closely working with the Luxembourg Center for System Biomedicine (LCSB), blurring the boundaries between art and sciences. This symposium will gather researchers and artists to present their research and reveal the links between Artificial Intelligence and Art. The talks will be followed by discussions with the public and with Max Kreis; the symposium will at the same time mark the inauguration of his end-of-residency exhibition.

Timetable

14:00   – Introduction

14:30 – Dr. Tugce Karatas, Creativity, Code, and Curation: AI for Art and Digital Curation

As artificial intelligence continues to redefine the boundaries of art, it also plays a pivotal role in shaping how we curate and experience digital collections. This talk explores the evolving relationship between AI, the artistic process, and digital curation. It will examine the way artists are using AI to generate innovative works and how these technologies are transforming the curatorial landscape by automating the selection, organization, and presentation of digital art. By bridging creativity with computational power, AI is expanding artistic possibilities while reshaping how art is curated, personalized, experienced, and shared in digital spaces. The talk will highlight key advancements in generative AI and digital curation tools while addressing the ethical questions of authorship, originality, and the future of both art creation and curation in an AI-driven world. Furthermore, Tugce Karatas will showcase AI-generated and curated works and reflect on the ethical and philosophical implications of this shift.

15:15 – Dr. Andreas Husch in conversation with artist Max Kreis

16:00 – Break

16:30 – Prof. Christoph Schommer, AI and Art– Towards an Artificial Creativity

In recent years, the original idea of AI to simulate the cognitive abilities of humans has focused primarily on data-driven applications, and in particular on the topic of learning. Mass data from the past is used to solve a specific problem with the help of machine learning methods, deep learning architectures, large language models and others. These often standardized procedures are increasingly reminiscent of an engineering for a purpose rather than of a simulation of intelligence. The lecture is dedicated to this development as well as to the topic of artificial creativity, which denotes the application of computer technologies to emulate, study, stimulate and enhance human creativity. Using the example of AI/Art, innovative projects that have been carried out at the University of Luxembourg and elsewhere will be presented.
